One of my favourite can't-be-arsed-it's-too-damn-hot things is this. It's simple, but, ever alert to ways in which I can make life simpler still, to add another serve of vegetables to the day, I came across a great little radish idea in Jamie Oliver's slightly naff magazine while waiting at Heathrow.
About time we talked food 'round here.
Oliver calls them Quick Japanese Pickles. His are made with green cabbage, torn into small pieces, and shiso leaves, something I'm keen to try this afternoon with the head of snappy wombok that's waiting in the fridge. I can't be doing with shiso though (sorry, hate the stuff). Basil, anything anise-y, would be good. Coriander would be best, but I haven't any of that either...but I digress...
Double the salt quantity given below if you want to play along. His suggestion to serve it 'with cocktail sticks and a very cold beer' is pretty damn appealing given the freak heatwave both we and Adelaide are currently sweltering through.
Pickled radishes, simpler stillSlice a bunch or two of radishes paper thin. Rub half a tablespoon of coarse sea salt into your radishes and rest for 3 minutes. Over the sink, squeeze as much liquid as you can from the radishes, shaking your hands of the juices. They will be limp and sad, but that's okay. Been feeling a bit that way myself all week. In a fresh bowl, mix your sad radish slices with 1-2 tablespoons (to taste, you see) of ponzu sauce or, failing that, a mixture of half lime juice, half tamari/shoyu. Things perk up nicely and off you go.
Eat as soon as possible, in whichever way you see fit.

I know that wilted feeling - just wish I could look as pretty as those radishes when I am fading in the heat!

Pretty photo
I have soft spot for both radishes and pickles...
Naff is a good word for it and overwelming, all those ideas (some of which are just great ) all that lifestyle...so full it leaves me empty.

Just thinking about the salt on the radishes reminds me of the tomato salad I did last week.
I'll have to give the radishes a go. Two hot days this weekend, and the beer will need a companion.

So strange to hear about news of hot weather, but crisp radishes, let alone pickles do have a way to perk things up! And I am so tickled to see the crow, so far from home.
