I think you know you're a Proper Victorian when you hear yourself speak the name Castlemaine with a short, clipped "a" rather than the longer, rest-of-Australia'd-say-it "ahh". Swore to keep my castles as c-ahhh-stles, but alas, eleven years later, I said it aloud and somehow, it felt right. The other thing you should know about Castlemaine is that when they say their fruit and vegetables are local, they mean it. The bloke in the shop these cumquats came from even knew which tree they'd grown on.

Ganga's Cumquats and Gin is a clever little recipe for when you only have a handful or so, and the syrup, we recently discovered, sparks up a pile of bitter greens no end. Wonderful.
