I hear what you're saying Lucy. We still eat meat in our house but not often and only from very high animal welfare standard producers. I'm happy with this most of the time but any hint of the meat going to waste really gets to me.

I think you've finally got to me with the Nadine Abensur subliminal messages :-) Where's a good book of hers to start?

Beautiful photos, lovely post. Closed eyes during the lamb-y bits :)

I've never thought of eating carrot tops personally, why isn't it a more common occurrence…and what becomes of all the carrot tops that we never got to see? My pet rabbit loves carrot tops and I searched for a carrot top supplier. But it seems they either come with gourmet carrots or if they were the cheap kind, they never see the light of day.

Lucy

sophie: very similar, you and i - here, we eat meat about once every two months, sometimes a little more often, most especially when it's all i can think about! nadine...well, i would start by borrowing her Cranks Bible from a library - it's wonderful - but my favourite by far is "Enjoy". she swapped london for the idyllic north coast n.s.w. byron bay (sigh :-)) and that book was hatched while here in oz.

aof: thanks, you.

genie: gosh, SUCH a good point! where DO all the rogue carrot tops go? maybe into pet food?? as you say, seems a huge waste...deborah madison (a fave vego cook) makes an incredible soup of carrot greens...must dig that recipe out again.

would love to hear how you go with a veg version - the carrots look lovely - glad you got to share them

Elaine

Ah, now I know the context of the gorgeous carrot & sink photo I've been loving & revisiting on Flickr.

Dare I admit that even though I'm vegetarian, I'm able to read ALL your food stories without shutting my eyes at the meaty bits? Truly, I think it's your lovely, reverent attitude.

(I just re-read the carrot-y parts of this post ... mmmm, braising never sounded so good to me.)

Lucy

johanna: they were gorgeous, the carrots. will report back...

elaine: oh yeah! braised baby carrots = the best thing to do with them, all sticky and tender and melting andandand. will see if i can get some thoughts about what i do with 'em down.

Sophie

Thanks Lucy - I will check out the cranks bible in the bookshop then no doubt leap to 'Enjoy'!

I like reversing the ratios too. I would love to know how the all-veg version works out. Yum.

Keltie

us always read and rarely have commented...Go on. Please please pretty please for an all veg version?

Lucy

hi keltie - this weather just won't let up! so yep, i'm working on it, with mushrooms and fat butter beans...
