It rained constantly while in Sydney this weekend: no bad thing in my book, but it did make it impossible to do the usual get-up-early-and-photograph-dad's-roses-while-they-sleep trick, so here are some of mine instead. Mum made Jill Dupleix's classic Crash Hot Potatoes while we celebrated my brother's birthday with big, delectable Desirees, adding lots more salt than I would (which means they were wonderful, of course). The potatoes above were dug from, of all places, the compost bin which it turns out is the perfect place for me to grow them, something dad concurs with. Who'd'a thunk? Kylie and I ate at Ester (amazing wood-fired food that reminds me of Cumulus Inc. just a bit) and talked about how damn long we've known one another. We worked out some stuff that I (and, later, she) needed to - don't long friendships just have a way about them? Kathryn and I talked about the compatability of beehives and chicken coops over a lovely Saturday morning coffee in Dulwich Hill, and I realised how much I love playing with toy cars by spending an age engaged in an elaborate game concocted by my three-year-old nephew.
These days Sydney's no longer home, which is interesting to note, even though I mostly ignored google 'cos I still know the short cuts around the inner suburbs better than any computer programme. Making dal tonight in Melbourne, one chock full of vegetables, and drinking a beer or two while listening to Buffalo Springfield in the late afternoon sun with the love of my life. Life is full of surprise. Hope your weekend was equally informative. And, I sincerely hope, as joyful.
mmm. dal. i think i make some version of dal every single week, either a thin soup version or the thicker kind, over rice. i've been experimenting with different masalas, and the only thing i can say is that they all seem good. our diet has changed a lot this winter … even more of a shift over to the yogic diet than before … it's about not only what we eat, but how much, and the timing of certain kinds of foods through the cycle of a day. and soon the seasonal part will all change again, with the oncoming spring weather. one thing i do realize is that in paying attention to eating in this way food is honored, but also it becomes somehow de-emphasized. it's interesting.
buffalo springfield … yes! and squirrels running by inside the walls of this house.
